Pitched Roof

Create more usable space

In moderate and cold climates, a substantial amount of heat is lost through the roof of an uninsulated home. To avoid costs and improve living conditions, insulating a pitched roof is among the most popular construction methods today. Effective insulation can help reduce energy costs and enhance comfort and efficiency. With insulation installed below, above and between the rafters of a pitched roof, more useable and habitable space can also be created in the home or building. If the loft space is only used for storage and remains uninhabitable, insulating the attic floor is a very good alternative.

Benefits

  • Resists heat transfer, increasing energy efficiency
  • Noncombustible products can slow the spread of fire
  • Increased drying potential – reduced risk of moisture accumulation
  • Maintains its performance over the lifespan of the building

Application

Vented

Insulating a pitched roof in a vented attic space often requires batt insulation to be installed between the roof rafters. The vented pitched roof assembly will also require a suitable space between the insulation and the roof sheathing. This will allow for continual air movement on the underside of the roof sheathing and prevents condensation on the underside of the roof. Combining batt and board insulation under the rafters can also help to reduce thermal bridging in the assembly.

FAQ

How do you apply loft insulation?

When installing slabs or rolls, the insulation material is loosely laid on the floor with joints tightly fit together. In the case of granulation, the material is blown on the loft, creating a solid layer of insulation.

Can you insulate between roof rafters?

Yes, installing rolls or slabs of insulation between the roof rafters is a popular way of enhancing thermal performance in pitched roof spaces. This sometimes requires installing a breathable membrane to ensure the roof is properly ventilated.

What is the best insulation for a pitched roof?

One of the most effective ways to insulate a pitched roof is to install quality products above the rafter line, creating a “warm roof.” ROCKWOOL applications offer excellent thermal and acoustic protection.
