EXTERIOR INSULATION FOR ROOF ASSEMBLIES
Design the right roof for your build and climate zone to achieve thermal continuity and long-lasting performance
A whole-house continuous insulation strategy includes the roof
An exterior insulated roof—also known as an “overroof”—is a critical part of the continuous insulation whole-house strategy to eliminate thermal bridging and improve durability of the assembly. Maintaining thermal continuity is important in any climate for efficiency, whether you’re heating or cooling the home.
This session will explore the most common types of roof designs, including flat, low-slope, and pitched roofs, as well as the different approaches to insulating. Much like exterior walls, roofs can be insulated from the exterior only, split insulated (both exterior and interior), and interior only.
The panelists, including R‑Class regulars Randy Williams and Travis Brungardt and guest builder Randy Rand, will discuss the many factors to consider when choosing exterior continuous insulation vs. interior batts, the benefits of stone wool insulation in these assemblies, and when it makes sense to consider a mixed material design.
You’ll learn how to:
Choose the right insulation assembly design: exterior only, split, or interior based on roof type and climate factors
Plan efficient installations: board sizing, framing patterns, fastening, and transition details to maximize speed, minimize waste, and ensure performance
Design vapor open roof assemblies: to permit drying, and minimize risk of moisture damage
Meet performance targets and ensure durability: thermal continuity, ventilation requirements, and rainscreen integration
Recognize the importance of material selection: where and how to integrate stone wool with other insulating materials when needed
